US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official told a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, leading airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said flights would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest after the shutdown began.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in history.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," the official said.

On that day, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel extending north to the city of Oakland, California.
