An Tale of Surprising Kindness: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
Back in 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to book a place to stay upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was taking place and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
As a visitor from Singapore, I thought perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking towards the casino, reasoning I could pass those hours in a place that was open through the night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition to succeed at the admissions interview the following day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.
Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
I must have looked out of place as a woman saw me wandering around the city center and inquired whether I needed help. I recounted my situation and right away she suggested I could sleep on the ground of her dormitory at the local university – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where the important interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided a meal: one stuffed baguettes she had from her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and somewhere safe and safe to spend the night.
In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she took as a young woman letting a man she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I operated under my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she offered that help – yet very grateful.
I never did go to ANU, and I never saw her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of generosity. I hope karma has rewarded her act of kindness many times over. We could all use more people with such compassion.
