Anthony Barry Reveals The Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
A decade ago, Barry was playing at a lower division club. Currently, he is focused on helping the England manager secure World Cup glory next summer. The road from athlete to trainer began as an unpaid coach with the youth team. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his purpose.
Rapid Rise
His advancement is incredible. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a name with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs led him to elite sides, plus he took on roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the peak in his words.
“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a systematic approach enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Obsession, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours all the time, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their strategies feature psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and building a true team. The coach highlights the England collective and avoids language including "pause".
“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”
Driven Leaders
Barry describes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own the entire field and we dedicate long hours toward. It’s our job not just to keep up of changes and to lead and set new standards. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to clarify complicated matters.
“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We have to play a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it during that time. It’s to take it from idea to information to understanding to action.
“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”
World Cup Qualifiers
He is getting ready on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed qualification by winning all six games without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; instead. Now is the moment to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play must reflect all the positives from the top division,” he comments. “The fitness, the adaptability, the physicality, the integrity. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.
“To make it light, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run as they do in club games, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.
“There are emotional wins available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – playing out from the back, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information currently. They can organize – structured defenses. Our aim is to speed up play across those 24 metres.”
Drive for Growth
Barry’s hunger for improvement is relentless. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns regarding the final talk, especially as his class included stars like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he entered tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton locally, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.
Lampard’s successor at Chelsea took over, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry from Chelsea to work together again. English football's governing body see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
