Arrangements for Putin-Trump Meeting Shelved Shortly After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no plans" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has stated.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was not "necessary".

The White House withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with insiders indicating the president had urged him to give up extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Russia.

Nevertheless, on this week Trump embraced a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he stated.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was only interested in "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would only amount to a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the war required resolution, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of extensive requirements that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky said talks regarding the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the sole subject that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently occurred before speculation that the US was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike Russian territory.

Zelensky asserted it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he added.
