In a significant move for their retooling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a lucrative contract with the power-hitting player.

Financial Terms and Added Benefits

The deal includes a seven-figure signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with salaries of sixteen million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the final year.

Notably, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• A seven-figure bonus for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
• $500,000 for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
• $250K for ranking fourth through 10th.
• Another $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.

The agreement includes that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his permission and makes him a free agent at the termination of the contract. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..

Compensation and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever player from Japan to play for the White Sox, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 on February 2nd, joins a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a 60-102 season, finishing at the bottom in the division but showing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, surpassing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His last year was limited to just 56 appearances due to an muscle issue. Even with recording often, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing primarily at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The very next day in the final against the Team USA, he slugged a game-tying home run in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.

The power hitter is scheduled to be unveiled at a press conference on the coming Monday.
