Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "with execution" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Recording That Triggered the Debate
The video footage, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past served in defense or security capacities.
"Similar to us, you all swore an vow to safeguard and uphold this constitution," the officials stated in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution are not only from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline unlawful commands, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to carry out directives that break the legal system or our constitution."
The Former President's Angry Response
The clip reportedly trigger a angry response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Respond
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader issued a unified declaration condemning the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our country with great loyalty and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to ensure the safety of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these unhinged social media posts and withdraw his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.
Lawmakers' Defiant Answer
The officials who participated in the video also published a declaration.
"We identify as former service members and defense specialists who love this United States and made an oath to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to honor it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that important responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the law," they stated. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they execute their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "Every American must unite and censure the ex-president's calls for our death and political violence. This is a moment for moral clarity."
More Governmental Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's comments and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the execution of government members."
He continued: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this right away and unconditionally."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", labeling the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "It is very dangerous, you have leading members of the government telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that's historic in American history."
The GOP official also reportedly informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the wording and decide all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Does the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative responded: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "We see active officials of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the commander in chief's proper directives."
She said: "The sanctity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can result in confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
