Ghostface OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.
An Unexpected Return for Fallon Favorites
It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since a small appearance is a long-held wish, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he received the offer from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.
"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a bizarre shared scenario. The chance of a self-referential story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.
