Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
