Israelis mark second anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian peace talks continue
Israelis have assembled throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A high-ranking representative familiar with the talks said that an late session of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.
The representative explained the day's discussions ended without significant progress, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He added that the talks are "tough and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to reduce the differences between the two sides.
Critical Points in Talks
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future governance of the area
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until every captive come back not a single person will be secure."
"After we see everybody home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can start to recover," she continued.
Near the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the hostages to be released. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of Israelis want the conflict to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the location of the music event, mourners gathered to remember the victims.
From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side district of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"As the evening comes, the fear appears with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"We are terrified of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, notably my little child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."

The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had taken in the corpses of several people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
