Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries were reported.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
