Los Angeles Faces Record-Breaking Heat Just One Week Following Major Winter Weather.
In the wake of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, Los Angeles is now seeing abnormally hot temperatures for late February.
Record-Setting Temperatures
During the day Friday, the thermometer reached 91°F (33°C) in the city center, per data from weather officials. This breaks the previous daily record for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was set in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were noted on official maps for the region.
Safety Advisories
Authorities issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their recommendations included:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a car.
A Dramatic Shift
This sharp rise in mercury comes on the heels of a massive winter storm that pummeled the region last week. That storm delivered thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, causing flash flood warnings for countless residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also triggered a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Weekend Outlook
Forecasters predict some relief is expected. Temperatures were forecast to drop to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in downtown LA by overnight.
Additional areas that experienced 90°F featured Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to experience the upper eighties.
For the weekend, central LA can see temperatures in the 80s, with a further cooldown likely for the week ahead.
