Putin Pledges Uninterrupted Energy Shipments to India in Snub of US Demands

In a defiant signal to the West, President Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to provide “uninterrupted” supplies of energy resources to India. This declaration came when Putin and Modi met in New Delhi and asserted their bilateral ties were “resistant to foreign coercion.”

A Statement For the Western Countries

The statement, delivered Friday, was widely seen to be targeted at Washington, that have sought to compel New Delhi into scaling back its longstanding ties with Moscow. This comes is in response to previous US actions, notably the introduction of import duties targeting New Delhi due to its purchase of Moscow's energy exports.

“Our nation is a dependable exporter of energy resources and anything necessary for the advancement of India’s economy,” Putin remarked. “Russia is prepared to continue guaranteeing the uninterrupted delivery of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, though he did not naming energy specifically, supported the theme by stating that “a stable energy base has been a robust and crucial cornerstone of the bilateral alliance.”

Challenging Washington's Stance

In the lead-up to the summit, during a TV appearance, Putin had criticized Washington's stance on India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our nuclear fuel, how can you deny India have the identical right?”

This trip represented his first journey to India since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi made a deliberate show to demonstrate that the bond between the two leaders persisted strongly.

A Personal Welcome

In a rare step, Modi met Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders exchanged a hearty embrace as close allies before enjoying a one-on-one meal together.

He later described India's relationship with Russia as “a beacon” and said it was “built on reciprocal esteem and deep trust.”

Expanding Strategic Partnerships

The bilateral summit resulted in several important deals in the fields of defence and trade relations. One significant result was the completion of an strategic roadmap extending until 2030, which sets a goal to boost bilateral trade to $100bn each year by the target year.

Additionally pledged to reshape their strategic cooperation. While Russia continues to be India's largest exporter of defence equipment, its share has reduced over the past decade as India works to broaden its procurement.

The joint statement stressed cooperation in the co-development of cutting-edge defence platforms, even if specific details of purchases such as the Su-57 fighter jet were left out.

Overall, Russia and India restated that in the “current complex, strained, and uncertain geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties remain strong to external pressure.”
