The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
