TikTok Content Creators Driving Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Medication

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Investigational Drug Gaining Traction Online

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Voice Concerns

Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in users injecting substances of uncertain source.

Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing cost of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Service Response and Material Removal

According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Marketplace Operations

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of users, populated with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step instructions for preparing or administering at residence.

After minutes of joining one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Item Information and Costs

Within these communities, posts show dark colored packages with postal service stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly monitored dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“People are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in interest to recent price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to social media. But fake treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has previously encountered patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Producer Position

A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious health risks”.
