The deceased of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been located inside freezing appliances in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The victims, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been missing for several months, were detected on the end of last week. The cooling units were placed behind a plasterboard wall in the dwelling, located in the Innsbruck area.

A pair of males, a Austrian man, 55 and his brother aged 53, were arrested in the month of June. The 55-year-old, a work associate of the female victim, informed law enforcement last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but denied intentional killing.

Speaking to the media previously, a official for the state prosecutor announced the brothers were being detained on "high likelihood of homicide".

Personal details of those involved have not been disclosed by police, in accordance with local legislation.

The family's disappearance was first reported by the woman's cousin, who lives in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Investigators stated the woman's colleague told them at the time she had taken an extended trip with her child to visit her parents in the nation of Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then found to have been used overseas on multiple occasions.

But when investigators searched the victim's residence, her cellphone was located.

An individual also stated hearing a commotion in the flat, and cries of "mother" on the day the pair were presumed to have gone missing.

A wider police investigation was initiated, with officers finding various messages originating from the mother's device—among them a job termination message to her workplace and communications to the male colleague.

Law enforcement confirmed a significant cash transfer was also moved to the man.

Katja Tersch stated to reporters on that day that a rented space had been leased before the victims' disappearance and a freezer had been placed there.

The male siblings removed the freezer from the facility on the date the woman and her child went missing, Tersch said. And a shortly afterward, they acquired a second unit.

Investigators say they think this points to the fatalities were planned in advance.

"The reason for their demise remains unclear due to the advanced decay of the remains," Tersch stated.

Mayr—representing the state—noted the precise timeline is still unclear, but the remains were expertly concealed and were not found during a prior examination.

While the suspects were detained in June, it was only on the 12th of November that the 55-year-old confessed to an incident and to hiding the bodies. He rejects any plan to cause death, investigators said.

Meanwhile, his younger brother confessed to a cover-up but rejected knowledge of a homicide.

The brothers are at this time in pre-trial detention in prisons in separate locations, situated at a distance.

Through a combined announcement, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative declared the "alleged double murder... symbolizes the abrupt and violent termination of two individuals and uncovers a heartless setup".

"Females of all ages are being murdered due to the simple reality that they are female," they continued.

"Femicides are a strongly established and widespread concern that we must address decisively."
